Interview.ba — An independent news portal built to handle serious journalism at scale

Overview

An independent Bosnian news outlet founded by the INFOHOUSE Foundation in 2016, specializing in investigative journalism, politics, and community reporting across Tuzla Canton with an emphasis on accountability.

The challenge

High-traffic editorial sites must serve very different audiences — casual daily readers and in-depth researchers. Interview.ba also needed a custom feature with no off-the-shelf solution: an interactive map tracking phantom construction projects in Tuzla Canton.

The solution

The site was restructured around content categories, with navigation reflecting how readers actually browse (topic, format, recency). We built the custom Mapa TK tool for filtering by municipality, type, and construction status, and integrated newsletters and social features without compromising readability.

Outcome

  • Fast, clean platform serving casual and engaged readers
  • Mapa TK became a distinctive data-journalism tool
  • Multi-filter infrastructure project tracking system
  • Editorial navigation by topic, format, and recency
  • Podcast section with audio integration

User Journey Analysis

Actor: Tuzla Canton resident following local politics

Social

Sees a shared investigative article on Facebook — recognises Interview.ba credibility

Article pages optimized for social sharing — meta preview shows headline and article image, not homepage branding

Article read

Reads a long-form investigative piece — clean typography, no intrusive ads

Editorial design prioritizes reading — ads positioned to not interrupt the primary text column

Continuation

Discovers related reporting in the same topic category

Related content surfaced by topic and recency — not by internal editorial taxonomy

Mapa TK

Finds the interactive construction project tracker — filters by municipality

Data journalism tool built as a custom WordPress feature — no plugin existed for this specific accountability need

Return

Subscribes to the canton news newsletter after the third article visit

Newsletter capture offered after the 3rd article read — not on first visit or with an immediate pop-up

UX Artifacts

Editorial Navigation Taxonomy

Primary nav
Topics (Politics, Economy, Society, Culture) — reader-first labels
Secondary nav
Format (Interviews, Reports, Opinion, Data) — for depth-seeking readers
Temporal nav
Latest + Most-read (7 days) — for casual daily readers
Rejected structure
Internal department navigation — mapped to journalists, not readers
Mobile nav
Topics-first, prominent search — most readers arrive via social share

Mapa TK — Custom Feature Rationale

Problem
Phantom construction projects in Tuzla Canton had no public accountability tool
User need
Filter projects by municipality, type, status, and year
Data structure
Municipality + project type + funding status + year + last update
Filter logic
Multi-select across all fields — not mutually exclusive
No off-the-shelf solution
Built as a custom WordPress plugin — journalistic specificity required
Journalistic value
Became a primary reference tool for accountability reporting in the canton
